The sun is shining and the fish are biting here at Black Bear Lodge. This summer we have enjoyed great weather paired with various entertainment options. Some of our special events start with our featured performers at the Bear's Den Bar & Grill. Enjoy a fun filled night of karaoke with DJ Marvelous Marv every Thursday night. If singing isn't your style, we have great performances by JG Lightborne and Mark Wayne on every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday.

The fun doesn't stop there. Our campfire "Meet and Greet" is Sunday evenings, 7pm at South Point Campfire. This is a great way for our guests to get to know each other and make new friends. Professional fishing guide Fred Brogle helps answer any questions and gives out helpful fishing tips with his FREE fishing seminar at the Sunday campfire. Our guests can also enjoy s'mores by the campfire, with our children's activities director, Nikki.

It's no surprise that Nikki has been kept very busy this summer. From crafting to water play, the Black Bear children's summer program has been a great way for the children of our guests to learn and still have fun on the resort (meanwhile parents get some quiet time)! Children are free to choose the activities they wish to participate in, that way everyone can join at their leisure.

This summer sure has been sweet! Whether you enjoy fishing facts, roasting marshmallows by the campfire, or like to have your alone time on Little St. Germain Lake, we try to accommodate all of our guests needs, which makes Black Bear Lodge the ideal place for your summer vacation.

New ! Lakes & Links Fishing Tournament

We are always looking for something fun for our guests to do and thought " They love to fish and love to golf -why don't we let them do both? Let's do it for cash! So, we have put together what we think is an awesome tournament - one day of golf at the Eagle River Golf Course and one day of fishing Little St. Germain Lake to win cash money! The tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday June 3 and 4, 2011 (which, by the way is free fishing weekend in Wisconsin so you don't even have to have a license!) and we plan on making it a yearly event.

The fee of $ 199 per person (2 person teams) includes 2 nights of lodging, 18 holes of golf with boxed lunch, a $50 entry fee for the tournament, and Sunday morning breakfast banquet. We'll even provide a boat and motor for fishing if you don't have one! The cash awards will be based on the entries - it is 100% payback so the more that enter, the more you can win!

Ice Golf Tournament March 19, 2011

Ready for a good laugh? Celebrate the start of Spring the Northwoods way and golf on ice!

The Black Bear Lodge and the Bear's Den in St. Germain will be hosting an Ice Golf Tournament on Saturday March 19, 2011 to benefit the Vilas County Food Pantry.

The tournament will be held from 9am-2pm on Little St. Germain Lake. The entry fee of $10 per person, or $25 per family or adult foursome includes 9 holes of golf on ice (balls provided), appetizer spread at the Bear's Den, prizes and raffles. Area golf course pros will co-sponsor the event. Bring your clubs and gloves and the whole family!

Proceeds from the golf will be donated to the Vilas County Food Pantry. The Black Bear Lodge is a member of the Wisconsin Northwood's Golf Trail.

St Germain Snowmobile Bikini Run 2011!

The St Germain Radar Racers held a snowmobile radar run Jan 21-22 in West Bay of Little St Germain Lake. In addition to many radar runs against the clock, participants came out strong to raise funds for charity (Susan G Komen for the Cure, St Germain Fire and Rescue, and Plum Lake EMS) in their bikinis! Here's a peek at all the stunning race action!

The Bear's Den at Black Bear Lodge is home to two racers who topped the bikini radar run speeds: Heather Schneider and Bear's Den bar and grill owner, Joe Minaudo!

These photos were taken Thursday evening at Black Bear Lodge as snow accummulated throughout the day. We received more overnight, totalling about 5-6 inches of new snowfall in the 24 hour period. Vilas County trails, including the St Germain Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club trails, will officially open today at 1pm!

A huge winter storm is heading our way this weekend with varied forecasts from 6-12 inches expected to fall Saturday! With the cold temps we have had and more cold temps in the forecast for next week, we are very enthusiastic about the winter snowmobile season ahead. The Farmer's Almanac is also in our favor with a "cold and very snowy" outlook for Wisconsin this winter.

Wildlife at Black Bear Lodge

Fritz the Fox is back! He took up residency last winter outside the main office; we tried all winter to photograph him as he would trot past our front door or walk through the resort. Our Manager even came face to face with him on the lake front one day but did not have camera in hand! We found his tracks in the snow by the Treehouse yesterday, a sure sign that we will see him soon. Hopefully we can get a photo of him to share this winter! We saw squirrels carrying whole hot dog buns down the driveway today, which was very funny, a guest must be feeding them. Our Snowshow Hares have turned completely white, as have the weasels. Did you know that when the short-haired weasel turns white it is called an ermine? We watched one run across the trailer parking lot a few days ago; first time we can recall seeing one on the resort. When you stay at the Black Bear Lodge located on Little St. Germain Lake, you never know what kinds of wonderful wildlife you will encounter.

Vilas County Snowmobile Trails to Open!

The Vilas County Snowmobile Club Alliance has just announced that our snowmobile trails can and will open on December 10, 2010, weather permitting. We have had several snow squalls move through within the last 10 days with below freezing temperatures making for great trail preparation. The lakes are mostly iced over but not yet safe to ride on; cold weather is thickening the ice daily. OktoBEARfest was held Saturday, October 30, 2010, from 10-4 at Black Bear Lodge. A record crowd of approximately 1,500 people came to OktoBEARfest to join in the fun! There were activities for all ages, including live German music by Jim Pekol and his Orchestra. Brats, all-beef franks, kraut fritters, and German potato salad were available in the Bear’s Den Bar & Grill, along with full bar and German beer selections. Freshly baked German bread in a variety of flavors was also available for purchase. Food and beer proceeds will be donated to the Vilas County Historical Museum in Sayner, home of the first snowmobiles invented by Carl Eliason.

Children’s programs were provided throughout the day and included a pumpkin painting contest, face painting, caramel apple creations, and hula hoop contests. Among the pumpkin painting winners were Tyler, age 31/2 from Yorkville; Brooke, age 9 from Menominee Falls; and Cody, age 11 from Waunakee.

Twenty-eight vendors exhibited their unique art and craft wares in all of the ground-level lodging units at the resort, stretching out over 2,100 feet of lakeshore. Fest-goers could also ride around the resort on a tractor pulled hay ride.

Many craft and door prizes were given away throughout the day with hourly drawings at the Bear’s Den. The grand prize winner of a 2 night stay at the Black Bear Lodge valued at up to $450 was Sandy Wuest of Fond du Lac.

A costume judging contest and meet-the-vendors party with dinner buffet and live entertainment by Mark Wayne finished out the day’s festivities.

Sponsors who helped to make this year’s event such a big success include Camp’s SuperValu Foods, WJFW-TV12 and WRJO 94.50 Oldies Radio.

Wow, what great weather we are having! It is Indian Summer, which is defined by having a hard frost, followed by the temperature being 10 degrees above normal. So if you're looking for a place to go this weekend, bring the family and drive up to the Black Bear Lodge, on Little St. Germain lake.

Fall Equinox!

The autumn equinox occurs on or about Sept. 21, marking the official beginning of fall. On this day the sun rises and sets precisely in the east and the west. From this day forward, the sun will rise south of due east on the horizon until the sun pendulum swings back during the spring equinox in March. The sun rises and sets are beautiful on Lt. St. Germain Lake, and as the colors become more vivid, it is a perfect time to take the family for a ride around the lake.

Last weeks bride jumped into Lt. St. Germain Lake after her wedding. Family and friends watched as she ran down the dock and into the lake. The wedding was held in the Bear's Den at Black Bear Lodge. The groom rowed over to meet her after her big splash and gave her a big kiss, the wedding guests will have great memories!

We had two weddings at the Black Bear Lodge this past weekend. Congratulations to: Liz (Gallagher) & Shawn Henby our Saturday wedding and to: Misty (Fraser) & David Deal our Sunday wedding. Many of their family and friends commented as they checked out today, what a great time they had at the resort and wish they had more time to enjoy the lake and grounds.

Bird Watching

The Northwood's is a wonderful place to bring the family and enjoy bird watching! Our three migrating woodpeckers are the northern flicker, the red-headed woodpecker, and the yellow-bellied sapsucker. They begin their migration by the middle of this month. You will see them around Lt St. Germain Lake. Bring your binoculars and take a hike or bike ride on one of our many trails in St. Germain, WI, near Black Bear Lodge, and try to spot one!

Color Change in Leaves

Did you know what causes the leaves to change color? Light absorbing, green pigmented chlorophyll masks the other color-producing substances in a leaf during the summer. In the fall, when the trees stop producing chlorophyll, the making effect is eliminated and the yellows and reds that were hidden under the green chlorophyll become visible. Now you know the rest of the story and can share it with family and friends! Lt. St. Germain Lake is beautiful in the fall by boat or land. Take a walk or go on one of our wonderful biking trails in the northwoods and view the colors this fall.

When you're a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself silly. When you're a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you're sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute, cuddly cubs. Your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. Hummingbirds

The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are stocking up on as much nectar as they can right now, for their long journey across the Gulf of Mexico. It is amazing how this tiny bird can fly that far! Experts expect populations of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, as well as other migratory birds, to be affected by the spill. We hope your family sees the birds feeding and can enjoy them around Lt. St. Germain Lake.

The wedding tent is up at Black Bear Lodge, for the 220 guests, and goodie bags are waiting for family and friends. Guests who came early are out on pontoon boats and enjoying the resort. Tonight they are going to enjoy a Northwoods "Fish Fry" at the Bear's Den Bar & Grill on-site. What a great place to have your wedding and let your guests celebrate this event with you! Maggie & Joe the Bride & Groom are going to jump off the dock and "trash the dress" after the wedding, be sure to look for photos next week!

Wildlife facts!

Wildlife facts in the Northwoods': Did you know, the common loon can dive in excess of 200 feet. The double crested cormorant dives as deep as 120 feet, and members of the beaver families can stay under water for 10 to 12 minutes. You can see loons on Little St Germain Lake at the Black Bear Lodge resort in Wisconsin, during spring, summer and fall.

One of the children from a family staying here in one of our cottages on Little St. Germain Lake in Wisconsin, came into the resort office today to tell us, "This vacation has been more funner than going to Disney Land!!!" He did everything from fishing, swimming, made S'mores over a campfire, biking, to playing on the private sand beach. He participated in our Children's Activities and even completed the Scavenger Hunt to be rewarded with an ice cream treat from the Bear Necessities Gift Shop.

Her 8 children transformed our Cub Room into the full-service Lilly's Sweet Shoppe. They decorated and dressed the part to serve the rest of the family every type of ice cream and candy possible...
